NSAIDs - Safe use NSAID-safety

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are drugs with analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects to reduce pain, fever and inflammation. As analgesics, NSAIDs are non-narcotic. Prominent members of NSAIDs are aspirin, ibuprofen, Nabumetone and naproxen. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) has negligible anti-inflammatory activity and is strictly speaking not an NSAID. NSAIDs exert their action by preventing cyclooxygenase or COX (it has two forms: COX-1 protects the stomach lining from harsh acids and digestive chemicals; it also helps maintain kidney function. COX-2 is produced when joints are injured or inflamed). Common Cox 2 inhibitors are Celecoxib, Rofecoxib and Valdecoxib. Long term and/ or injudicious use of NSAIDs result in analgesic nephropathy.
