Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP)

One of the important biochemical investigations that is raised both in liver and bone diseases. Alkaline phosphatase originates from different tissues viz Liver, biliary tract, intestines, bones and placenta. It is raised, physiologically, during pregnancy. Biliary tract obstruction, primary biliary cirrhosis & metastases in the liver cause ALP to be raised. Bone diseases eg osteomalacia, rickets and bony metastases also cause ALP to be raised.
