Carcinoma of Larynx

Carcinoma of larynx should be suspected in any patient with hoarseness of the voice for three weeks or longer until proven otherwise. Most patients are elderly and almost always, are smokers. Supraglottic tumours account for about 30%, glottic tumours - 60%, and subglottic tumours 20% of all laryngeal carcinomas. Small tumours are treated with radiotherapy. Total laryngectomy is reserved for small tumours with metastatic neck nodes, large tumours, or residual disease or recurrence after radiotherapy. Supraglottic laryngectomy may be considered in the absence of metastatic neck nodes.
